About Russell D. McGovern

Paints portraits still lifes and landscapes in traditional and impressionists styles. A native of San Francisco, he began his formal training in New York State with a 3 year tutelage by Herb Abrams from the Art Students League of New York. He continued painting for many years while attending adult education classes and working in his home studio. Moving to California in 1979, he attended portrait, life drawing and oil painting classes at the Palo Alto Art Center Foothill College, College of San Mateo and Canada College. He studied art and art history in Paris in the 1990 “Semester in Paris” program during which time he attended evening classes in the Paris, l’ecole des beaux arts, followed by painting on-site landscapes and rural scenes in southern France and the Mediterranean area. He has painted scenes of French, Irish, Turkish as well as US urban and rural life.

He continues his art studies in Burlingame. He is a member of the Redwood City Sequoia Art Group, the Burlingame Art Society and the Society for Western Artists, where he holds the SWA Signature Award. He has been awarded numerous prizes during the past 26 years in local and community art exhibits, including “Artist  of the Year” at Burlingame Art Society.

We are saddened by the loss of Russell McGovern who passed away on April 16, 2015, just three days prior to his 93rd birthday. His was a life well lived!
